The shooting apparently happened prior to the car crashing near the corner of Grand Street and Elm Street, police said.

TRENTON - A man who was shot in the head early this morning is in extremely critical condition and breathing through a ventilator at the hospital, police said.

Detectives believe the man was behind the wheel of a car when he was shot once in the head, Lt. Mark Kieffer said. The car crashed near the corner of Grand Street and Elm Street in the South Ward.

Police officers sent out shortly after 2 a.m. on a shooting in progress call discovered the gravely wounded man alone in the vehicle.

"We believe there were other people in there," prior to the officers' arrival, Kieffer said.

Police this afternoon were seeking the man's family to confirm his identity. The man's name and age were not being released prior to contact with his family.

The victim was still alive at Capital Health Regional Medical Center today, thanks in large part to extraordinary efforts of the medical staff there, Kieffer said.

No suspect information or description of how the shooting occurred was immediately available. Police are investigating.

Anyone with information on this crime should call police at (609) 989-4170, or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
