Trenton police had identified the four city residents as suspects and issued warrants for their arrest by Tuesday.
TRENTON — Four suspects in a fatal city home invasion who fled as far away as Maryland and Arizona are all in custody following an investigation by Trenton detectives and a dragnet by federal fugitive hunters, authorities said today. The final suspect in the Aug. 16 killing of 25-year-old Kayron Jones was captured late this morning at the University of Maryland’s Eastern Shore campus in the town of Princess Anne, Deputy U.S. Marshal Mike Schroeder said.
Trenton police had identified the four city residents as suspects and issued warrants for their arrest by Tuesday, Schroeder said. The U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force began an intensive search for the men, part of the agency’s larger efforts to fight against the rising crime and violence Trenton has experienced this year.
“There is an aggressive initiative by us to help out the city of Trenton,” Schroeder said.
The task force found 24-year-old Naquan Chance almost immediately, perhaps because he never left the city. Chance was arrested on Spring Street without incident on Wednesday, Schroeder said.
Task force members continued to work on tracking down the other three suspects.
“There was a lot of interviewing going on,” Schroeder said. “It was nonstop interviews — family members, you name it. The guys were just burning the candle at both ends.”
Word of that effort may have reached two of the other fugitives. London Feliciano, 24, surrendered Wednesday to the Berquin Heights Police Department in Prince George County, Md. On Thursday, Quoshean Williams, 23, gave up to local law enforcement in Surprise, Ariz., authorities said.
Through their interviews, investigators found that their fourth suspect – 24-year-old Anthony Hemingway – had fled to the University of Maryland in order to hide out on campus with a cousin who is a student there. The case was passed along to the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, which knocked on the cousin’s door at 11 a.m. today. Hemingway answered the door.
“As soon as he saw them, he just dropped to the floor immediately,” Schroeder said.
Feliciano, Williams, and Hemingway will all be extradited back to Trenton. All the suspects face identical charges: murder, felony murder, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, burglary and robbery. Upon their transport to New Jersey, all will be held on $1 million full cash bail, Trenton Police Lt. Mark Kieffer said.
City police today released no additional information in the killing of Jones, who was shot in the chest after three men climbed through the window of his home on the 600 block of North Olden Avenue. Motive in the case has not been publicly discussed by police.
Jones was arrested by the New Jersey State Police just hours before he was killed. He was driving in East Trenton the afternoon of Aug. 15 when troopers stopped him and later charged him with drug offenses. He was released later in the day.
The police investigation found there was “definitely no” connection between his arrest and slaying hours later, Kieffer said.
