It appeared the man had been beaten with a 4-foot section of a 2-by-2 brown-painted handrail from a front porch.

TRENTON
— A 49-year-old city man was beaten and left in the middle of Walnut Avenue Saturday night, and police are trying to find out what exactly happened to him.

Officers were called out to the 300 block of Monmouth Street around 11:45 p.m. Saturday on a report of an assault in progress. When they arrived, they found the man in the road on the 100 block of Walnut Avenue, face-down and unresponsive, Lt. Mark Kieffer said, with a laceration to his left eyelid and other head injuries. He was rushed into surgery at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, and on Sunday was in critical condition but expected to survive, Kieffer said.

It appeared the man had been beaten with a 4-foot section of a 2-by-2 brown-painted handrail from a front porch, Kieffer said. But today, the exact weapon used remained unclear.

“We don’t know,” Kieffer said.

The suspects in the case remain unknown, and police did not release any descriptions. No arrests have been made. Anyone with information on the case should call police at (609) 989-4170, or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
