The county's jail facility in Hopewell Township had its mail room secured as a Hazmat team from the Trenton Fire Department investigated.

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP — Hopewell and Trenton firefighters sent to the Mercer County Corrections Center this afternoon found a white powder substance inside a piece of mail was not toxic, a county spokeswoman said.

The county's jail facility off Route 29 was not locked down during the roughly hour-long incident. Authorities said they secured the mail room near the visitors lobby where the mail containing the powder was opened.

"The facility is otherwise operating normally," county spokeswoman Julie Willmot said earlier. "Two employees were exposed to the mail."

Local firefighters and a Hazmat team from Trenton were sent to the scene, Willmot said.

The incident began around 12:30 p.m. when an employee opened the mail and saw the possible white powder, she said. It was declared safe by 1:45.

Editor's note:This post has been updated to reflect the conclusion of the incident.
