Quran Brittingham, 20, left the house they shared with his guns, drugs and personal items and was stopped by the police, authorities said.

HAMILTON — A fight with his girlfriend cost a Trenton man his freedom early Wednesday after he left the house they shared with his guns, drugs and personal items and was stopped by the police, authorities said.

Quran Brittingham was getting a ride from a friend when township police pulled his friend over, arrested both of them and seized three handguns and a rifle, according to authorities.

They also allegedly found heroin in the car.

Police do not believe Brittingham and the driver of the car, 45-year-old Hamilton resident Thomas D. McMath, were on their way to hurt anyone, and they take his story about having to get away from his girlfriend at face value.

“That was the story he explained to the officer,” Capt. James Stevens said today.

Brittingham, who is 20, was in the passenger seat when McMath was pulled over by Officer Russ Newborn and Officer David DeVictoria on Lalor Street near Deutz Avenue around 12:10 a.m.

The officers found both Brittingham and McMath were wanted on outstanding warrants, and allegedly could see the stock of a long gun through the car window. They searched the vehicle and found the handguns — a 9mm Ekol, a .45 caliber Remington 1911, and a .32 caliber Beretta semi-automatic — inside. The long gun was a Mossberg International .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle, police said.

Brittingham’s personal effects, which he had packed after the dispute, were also in the car, along with hollow-point ammunition and glassine packets of heroin, Stevens said.

Both McMath and Brittingham were charged with weapons offenses including unlawful possession of handguns and a rifle, unlawful possession of high-capacity magazines, and unlawful possession of hollow-point ammunition. In addition, Brittingham was charged with the drug offenses and his outstanding warrants, while McMath was charged for outstanding warrants that included charges out of Ewing and Trenton.

Both men were lodged in the Mercer County Corrections Center.
