TRENTON — Police officers making a traffic stop in the West Ward early Friday found two guns, heroin and crack cocaine inside a hidden backseat compartment of a vehicle, police said.

Officers Michael Palinczar and Sheila Tatarek were patrolling in the area of Oakland Street and Coolidge Avenue around 12:15 a.m. when they stopped a pickup truck driven by 19-year-old Daevon Bell.

The officers had seen Bell pull into an Oakland Street parking lot and observed he had improperly tinted windows. When they pulled Bell over, the officers saw he was very nervous and gesturing to three other men who were standing in a courtyard of the housing project, said Lt. Mark Kieffer, a police spokesman.

When Palinczar and Tatarek got out of their police vehicle to issue tickets, Bell stepped out of the truck and reached inside the back seat of the vehicle, according to Kieffer. When Bell did that, they conducted a warrant check and shined their flashlights in the back on the car.

In the back seat there was a hidden compartment, and inside it was a gun, laying on top of another gun, on top of drugs, Kieffer said.

Police seized the .22 caliber H&R handgun along with a .357 magnum, which was reported stolen from Hamilton. They also allegedly found 49 glassine packets of heroin and crack cocaine.
