The 3-year-old girl inside the apartment with the suspect was taken out. The girl's mother and that woman's 1-year-old son were able to escape the apartment earlier in the morning.
TRENTON - A four-hour hostage situation in Trenton has ended after the suspect surrendered to State Police tactical troopers, city police confirmed.
The suspect, whom family members identified as Kevin Robinson, was led out in handcuffs from the apartment building on Coolidge Avenue around 9:50 a.m.
Police said a 3-year-old girl who was inside the apartment for the length of the standoff was found safe inside. The girl's mother and 1-year-old brother were able to slip out of the apartment earlier in the standoff, Lt. Steve Varn said.
City police were called to the apartment complex in the middle of the West Ward housing projects at 5:45 a.m. after they received a report of a man holding a woman hostage inside. Going up to the second-floor apartment, officers verified the woman and two children were inside.
New Jersey State Police were called out and soon assumed tactical control, Varn said. The tactical TEAMS unit was sent to the scene and police surrounded the building.
Robinson's uncle Rodman Bird said he was briefly able to speak with Robinson in an effort to try to persuade his young nephew to end the crisis peacefully.
Varn said the woman and the two children were being taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Police did not immediately identify the suspect or say what charges would be filed against him.
