TRENTON — A 37-year-old city man wounded in a shooting Monday evening had been shot in the leg during a robbery where a large amount of cash was taken, police said yesterday.

The victim was on North Montgomery Street near Holland Street on the banks of the Delaware & Raritan Canal when he was approached by two men, Lt. Steve Varn said.

They ordered him to turn over his money, and he gave them the large sum of cash that was on his person, Varn said.

After the robbery, they shot the victim in the leg for an unknown reason. Residents in the area called police at 6:20 p.m. to report hearing shots being fired.

The victim walked into the Capital Health Regional Medical Center emergency room 40 minutes later, police said, after taking a cab to the hospital. He was treated for his injuries there.

Police described his assailants as two black males in their early 20s, one tall and thin wearing an olive green Carhartt jumper and carrying a handgun, the other about 5-foot-7, medium build and wearing a gray hoodie.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Anyone with information should call police at (609) 989-4170, or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
