Chevin B. Burgess was found dead by firefighters immediately after they extinguished a car blaze on the 100 block of Hart Avenue on Jan. 4, officials said.
TRENTON – The man found inside a burning car on Hart Avenue early this month has been identified as a 22-year-old city man, authorities said.
Chevin B. Burgess was found dead by firefighters immediately after they extinguished a car blaze on the 100 block of Hart Avenue on Jan. 4, said Casey DeBlasio, spokeswoman for the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
An autopsy completed a few days after the fire ruled his death a homicide and found that Burgess had died of a gunshot wound. Because his body was badly burned, Burgess was identified using dental records, DeBlasio said.
Firefighters were sent out to the corner of Hart Avenue and Hurley Street at 7:07 p.m. on Jan. 4 for a reported house fire. Arriving three minutes later, they found a car engulfed in flames.
After putting out the blaze, firefighters moved closer to the car to check for hot spots. Then, they discovered the body in the passenger area, Battalion Chief Steve Amiott said.
There is currently no suspect information and the Mercer County Homicide Task Force continues to investigate this death, DeBlasio said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the task force at (609) 989-6406 or the Trenton Police Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
