EAST WINDSOR — Robbery was the motive in an armed home invasion where a 22-year-old was beaten and tied up with duct tape while men went through his apartment Friday, police said yesterday.

Electronics and cash were taken during the robbery by the suspects, who remain at large. The reason they targeted the apartment remains unclear.

“We’re still investigating,” Lt. Rich Bernstein said yesterday.

There were no drugs that police were aware of inside the apartment off Dorchester Drive and investigators are for now ruling out drugs as a motive in the 7:30 p.m. Friday robbery, Bernstein said.

The suspects in the home invasion at the Princeton Arms North I apartment complex gained entry to the residence by yelling the name of the 22-year-old’s stepfather while ringing the doorbell, according to police.

When the 22-year-old, who was home alone at the time, opened the door, one of the suspects punched him in the face and knocked him to the floor. The three suspects then allegedly forced their way inside.

All three men were armed with handguns, according to police. One of the suspects guarded the 22-year-old, who was bound on his hands and ankles with duct tape. Three other people live in the apartment, but were not home at the time.

After the suspects departed, the 22-year-old was able to loosen his restraints enough to get to a phone and call police.

Police described the first suspect as a heavy-set black male, 6-foot-3, in his mid-40s with a moustache and beard and wearing a black hat, black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and tan boots. The second suspect was a black male, thin build, 5-foot-7, wearing a black hat, black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black sneakers, while the third suspect was described as a black male, thin build, 5-foot-11, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and white sneakers.

Anyone with information on the case should call East Windsor police at (609) 448-5678.
