TRENTON — A 16-year-old was arrested yesterday afternoon after he accidentally shot his 18-year-old friend in the neck with a small-caliber handgun, police said.

The victim was in stable condition today and is expected to survive his injuries, Lt. Steve Varn said.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Spring Street shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, but the victim was already at the hospital. Their investigation led them to a home on the 200 block of Fairway Drive nearby, where the actual shooting took place, Varn said.

“It appears that the victim was shot by mistake,” Varn said.

Police found out the 18-year-old victim had been taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center by car, where he was treated for the gunshot wound to the neck. Their investigation determined he was shot by the 16-year-old, who was arrested. Police seized a small Derringer handgun from inside the home on Fairway Drive.

Juvenile petitions for aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose were signed against the teen, who was taken to the Middlesex County Youth Detention Center.
