EWING – A 14-year-old boy suffered minor injuries to his hand when he tossed away a firecracker left on his back porch Saturday night, police said.

The firecracker had been lit and left by a a 16-year-old township boy who was visiting the home on Franklyn Road, police said in a news release.

The older boy lit the firework at about 9:15 p.m., sending it spinning around as it threw off burning embers. The spray damaged a curtain, the carpet and a shirt on the porch, police said.

Fearing it would burn the porch down, the 14-year-old tried to pick up the firecracker and throw it out the door. He suffered swelling and a burning feeling in his hand, police said.

The older boy ran away before officers arrived, police said. The injured boy was taken by ambulance to Capital Health Medical Center–Hopewell for treatment.
