Bencivengo, who resigned from office Nov. 20 after he was found guilty, faces up to 20 years in federal prison
HAMILTON -- Former Hamilton Mayor John Bencivengo faces sentencing this morning for accepting $12,400 in bribes from an insurance broker in exchange for his influence over a lucrative school board contract.
Bencivengo, who resigned from office Nov. 20 after he was found guilty, could be ordered to serve up to 20 years in federal prison. The sentencing is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
Bencivengo was arrested in April and charged with taking bribes from health insurance broker Marliese Ljuba, who was working as an FBI informant. Bencivengo agreed to help Ljuba retain a school district contract that brought $3.9 million commissions to her Vineland-based firm over three years.
Rob Warney, the township’s former community planning director, is scheduled to be sentenced March 22 for his role in the case. He pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering.
