TRENTON — Detectives hunting for illegal guns and violent offenders in the West Ward Sunday night arrested a 22-year-old city man with a handgun, police said.

Tactical Anti-Crime Unit 2 was operating in a “wolf-pack” formation, where one car follows another as they travel through the city. On Highland Avenue about 10:10 p.m., they went to pull a car over for speeding.

“They put the lights on behind it to pull over, and all of a sudden it speeds up,” said Sgt. Tony Manzo, TAC 2’s commander.

About a block away, the car pulled over and detectives got out to question the three occupants. A man in the passenger seat, later identified as city resident Andre McMullen, began fidgeting and directing his hand toward his waistband, Manzo said.

McMullen was told to get out of the car. As he got out, police allegedly saw the butt of a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun protruding from his waistband.

McMullen was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. The gun was confiscated, and the driver and other passenger in the car were let go when police found they had no outstanding warrants.
