Brookins was not previously charged in the shooting but is being held in jail on other charges, Assistant Prosecutor Lew Korngut said.
TRENTON — Another man has been charged in the fatal shooting of a city man at a dice game last July, prosecutors announced today.
A state grand jury handed up an indictment on April 24, charging Allen Q. Brookins, 21, of Hamilton, with third-degree hindering apprehension or prosecution for allegedly driving the getaway car that the shooter used to flee the scene. Brookins was not previously charged in the shooting but is being held in jail on other charges, Assistant Prosecutor Lew Korngut said.
Brookins was sentenced in October, nearly three months after the shooting, to a little more than a year in jail for violating his parole on a second-degree charge of unlawful possession of a weapon from 2009. He had previously been sentenced to five years for that charge, but was released on parole after serving about two years in jail.
The indictment also charges 21-year-old Kevin Boone of Trenton with murder and second-degree charges of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Korngut said previously that Boone was identified by witnesses at the scene as the man who shot David Lewis III during a dice game on Elba Alley near East Paul Avenue. Lewis was found on July 19 just after 7:45 p.m. shot in the head and body, police said.
Boone allegedly told police in a statement that he and Lewis had an ongoing disagreement. He said that Lewis threatened to kill him on several occasions, Korngut said.
Malekia Montgomery, Boone’s attorney, did not respond to a message left at her office today. She previously said her client told her the shooting was not intentional.
Boone is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Brookins does not yet have an attorney representing him on the charge. A bail has not been set for the hindering charge.
A call to the attorney that represented Brookins on the weapons charges and violation of parole was not returned today.
Brookins is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment conference on May 17.
