BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP — Twenty-one catalytic converters were stolen from cars at the Burlington Volkswagen dealership early Wednesday morning, police said today.
Police said they were called to the Route 130 dealership just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday for a reported theft.
Upon their arrival, police said they discovered that 11 diesel converters and 10 gas converters were taken from cars.
Police said they are reviewing surveillance footage that shows three subjects at the dealership about 1 a.m.
Catalytic converters are highly sought after because they contain small amounts of precious metals such as platinum, palladium or rhodium. The precious metals, which change over the car’s exhaust to less harmful emissions, can fetch a hefty price even in small quantities. According to the Nationwide insurance company, rhodium can sell for about $9,500 an ounce, while platinum pays about $2,000 per ounce.
Police said 11 of the catalytic converters were taken from diesel cars while the remaining 10 converters were taken from gas cars.
Anyone with information about this incident should call the Burlington Township Police Department at (609) 386-2019 or the Citizen Tipline at (609) 239-5896
