LAMBERTVILLE— A Flemington couple had their 18-month-old child with them when they attempted to rob a woman early this morning, police said.
Officers were called to the first block of Bridge Street around 9 a.m. after a 48-year-old Princeton woman reported that a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses attempted to take her handbag.
The woman told police that a male passerby assisted her and tried to grab the suspect, but the man fled in a gold minivan which was driven by a woman, police said.
Police said several witnesses provided them with a vehicle description and license plate numbers.
About 30 minutes after the robbery, police pulled over the minivan in the area of Route 29 and Fiddlers Creek Road and arrested Anthony McMellon, 36 and Dawn Bowker, 34, police said.
The couple’s 18-month-old child was found inside the vehicle at the time of the arrest and police said the child was present when the robbery took place.
The child was not properly restrained in the car, but was unharmed, police said.
Police said McMellon was carrying a knife and Bowker had drug paraphernalia.
Both McMellon and Bowker were charged with robbery, aggravated assault, criminal possession of a weapon, child endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.
As of 6 p.m. today, both were being processed at police headquarters, awaiting judicial review of bail.
