TRENTON — A suspect in a double shooting last month was identified by the victims after they reviewed a surveillance video from a Radio Shack store and recognized the man, a prosecutor said in court yesterday.
Casey Corker, 25, allegedly shot two men as he robbed them of $700 while they sat in their vehicle parked on Oakland Street on April 12, said Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer Eugene.
Corker faces two charges of attempted murder and weapons offenses in connection with the shooting. One of the victims was shot in the groin and the other was shot in the abdomen.
Eugene said that when the victims were approached by Corker they recognized him from seeing him in a Radio Shack store they were in earlier that day. After watching a surveillance video from the store they were able to identify the suspect for police, she said.
Superior Court Judge Thomas Sumners set Corker’s bail at $250,000 yesterday. Corker was already being held in lieu of $150,000 bail after being arrested on April 17 for an unrelated incident in which he allegedly made false 911 calls.
Just before 11 p.m. on April 17, Corker allegedly dialed 911 twice and reported, separately, that shots were fired on the 600 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard and that a man was shot in the leg on West State Street, officials said. When police found these reports were false, they were able to trace the calls to Corker and arrested him, officials said. After finding an assault weapon on him, they charged him with weapons possession, possession of a high-capacity magazine, and false public alarm, police said.
Eugene asked for bail to be set higher, but the defense argued against her characterization of the crime.
“It sounds to me at worst this is a robbery, not a criminal attempt to commit murder,” said Kathleen Redpath-Perez, Corker’s attorney.
Corker denies all of the charges he faces and will return to court on May 29.
