TRENTON — A city man led a police officer on a foot chase through the Donnelly homes housing project late Friday morning, dropping a handgun before being arrested, police said.

Officer Sam Johnson was at Southard Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard about 11:30 a.m. Friday when he heard several gunshots that sounded like they were coming from nearby Beakes Street. When he went toward the projects to investigate, Johnson’s eye was drawn to a “heavy-set” 29-year-old city resident Aaron Prillo, Lt. Mark Kieffer said.

“As soon as he saw the cops, he grabbed his waist area and ran for the courtyard,” Kieffer said.

Johnson ran after Prillo, who allegedly dropped a gun on the ground as he fled. Prillo ran through the projects, into and out of the basement of a building, and jumped a fence onto Martin Luther King Boulevard before he was apprehended by backup officers, police said.

Officers recovered a .22-caliber H&R revolver from the path of the foot chase, and found crack and heroin on Prillo, Kieffer said. Prillo was charged with two counts of drug possession with intent to distribute, two counts of possession with intent within 500 feet of public housing, possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun for unlawful purpose, resisting arrest, and certain persons not to possess a weapon.
