Anthony Burkhalter was indicted on charges of robbery and sexual assault. Three other city men were indicted on attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting him.
TRENTON -- A grand jury has handed down indictments of five city men for two home invasions that occurred last fall, as well as of one of the men for sexual assault and of three of the others for allegedly shooting him 10 times, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said.
Anthony Burkhalter, 23, who was charged with two sexual assaults, including one that occurred during a break-in, the prosecutor said in a news release.
Burkhalter and Hector Maldonado, 27, Joel Flowers, 23, Shabazz Boyd, 19, and Khalif Chapman, 18, were all indicted on burglary charges related to the break-ins, the release indicated.
Maldonado, Flowers and Boyd were indicted Friday on attempted murder charges for the shooting of Burkhalter, prosecutor's spokeswoman Casey DeBlasio said.
Separately, Burkhalter was also indicted for sexually assaulting a woman on the street in Trenton, the prosecutor's office said.
In December, Burkhalter's attorney said he may have been coerced to participate in two home invasions during which he allegedly committed sexual assaults. A judge questioned the assertion and raised Burkhalter's bail to $1 million.
Burkhalter sexual assaulted a woman in her home on Oct. 16 during one robbery, and another woman on the street on Nov. 24, an assistant prosecutor said at the time. Four days later, Burkhalter was shot 10 times in the abdomen by two men on Jersey Street.
