TRENTON — Three city men who were part of a home invasion ring have been indicted for shooting one of their accomplices after he committed a sexual assault last fall, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Five Trenton men — Hector Maldonado, 27, Joel Flowers, 23, Shabazz Boyd, 19, Anthony Burkhalter, 23, and Khalif Chapman, 18 — were indicted last week on burglary charges related to two home invasion robberies last fall, the prosecutor’s office said in a news release.

Maldonado, Flowers and Boyd were also indicted on attempted murder charges for shooting Burkhalter 10 times the day after the second break-in, prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Casey DeBlasio said.

Burkhalter was indicted on multiple sexual assault charges, including for at least one assault that occurred during the home invasions, the prosecutor’s office said.

No one else in the group was indicted on sexual assault charges related to the break-ins, DeBlasio said.

Burkhalter was also indicted for sexually assaulting a woman on the street in Trenton, the prosecutor’s office said. He faces a total of 14 counts of sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault.

In December, Burkhalter’s attorney said he may have been coerced into participating in the home invasions. Superior Court Judge Gerald Council questioned the assertion and raised Burkhalter’s bail to $1 million.

Burkhalter allegedly committed one of the assaults on Oct. 16, when he broke into a Trenton home and found a woman with her small child. He twisted the woman’s arm behind her back, took her to her bedroom, photographed her with a cell phone and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors said during a previous hearing.

Burkhalter sexually assaulted another woman walking down a Trenton street on Nov. 24, prosecutors said. Neither of the woman knew him before the attacks, they said.

Four days after the attack on the street, Burkhalter was shot 10 times in the abdomen by at least two men in the area of a Jersey Street residence that is listed as his address, police and prosecutors said. His attorney has said he was shot in retaliation for the alleged sexual assaults.

While Burkhalter was hospitalized following the shooting, he gave a statement to investigators admitting to three sexual assault incidents and claiming he was forced to commit two home invasions, an assistant prosecutor said.
