TRENTON — A plea deal may be in the works for the Trenton man who allegedly was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle during a drive-by shooting that killed a man and stopped traffic on Route 29 for 16 hours last year, prosecutors said.

Anthony Marks, 24, did not fire any shots in the death of Daquan Dowling and he may be in a better position for a plea deal than his accomplices, said Assistant Prosecutor Jim Scott.

“The one person in (this shooting) that I believe the state may be able to resolve before trial, would be Mr. Marks,” Scott said.

William Mitchell, 25, and Andre Romero, 21, were allegedly the shooters in this drive-by, as they sat on the passenger side of the vehicle as it pulled up alongside the car Dowling was driving and sprayed it with bullets, prosecutors said at a previous hearing.

Dowling was driving his friend’s car and was killed nearly instantly when a bullet struck him in the head, prosecutors said. The man in his passenger seat tried to regain control of the vehicle while at the same time keeping his head down to avoid the gunfire. Eventually the car hit a bridge near Memorial Drive, police said.

Route 29 remained closed through the night and into the next day as police investigated the scene, and major traffic delays affected commuters coming into the city.

Marks, Mitchell and Romero all face murder charges, said Casey DeBlasio, spokeswoman for the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. They also face weapons and theft charges along with Jamar Square, 19, a fourth man in the car, DeBlasio said. A fifth man involved, Louis Alvarado, 22, faces theft charges for his role in allegedly stealing the car, but was not in the car during the shooting.

Marks, who has already pleaded guilty on an unrelated drug case, will return to Superior Court Judge Pedro Jimenez’s courtroom in July in the shooting case.
