Police noticed the car driven by a 19-year-old city man because it had tinted windows and an improperly mounted license plate, Lt. Mark Kieffer said.
TRENTON — A city man who was trying to hide a handgun under the seat of his car during a vehicle stop Sunday afternoon was arrested and charged with weapons offenses, police said.
Officers John Sangillo and Travis Maxwell were patrolling on Stuyvesant Avenue around 2:15 p.m. when they saw a car with tinted windows drive past. They stopped the car on Parkside Avenue near Oak Lane, Lt. Mark Kieffer said.
Sangillo walked up to the driver’s side of the car and allegedly saw 19-year-old Daevon Bell trying to put something underneath the seat. Sangillo told Bell to show his hands, and when Bell briefly complied Sangillo could see the man was holding something, police said.
“He brought it up and dropped it between his legs,” Kieffer said.
Sangillo opened the door of the car and could see Bell had a Sig Sauer P239 semi-automatic handgun, police said.
Bell was arrested and handcuffed, and a search of his car allegedly yielded 14 ½ yellow pills believed to be the prescription painkiller Endocet along with two packets of heroin.
Bell was charged with drug and weapons offenses and also received motor vehicle summonses for the tinted windows and his license plate, which was improperly mounted on the dashboard, police said.
