Keith Day, 25, suffered multiple gunshot wounds but is expected to survive.
TRENTON — A city man who allegedly fired a gun near a crowd last night was shot multiple times by police and was later found in a Willingboro hospital, police said.
Officers were called to the first block of Hudson Street around 11:45 p.m., where they allegedly saw Keith Day, 25, shooting near the group of people on the street.
“As officers approached the suspect, ordering him to drop the weapon, the gun was raised in the officers’ direction,” Lt. Steve Varn said in a news release. “At that time officers fired at the suspect.”
Though struck by the officers’ gunfire, Day was able to get into a car and flee the scene, police said.
Police broadcast a countywide alert for the car, which state troopers found unoccupied early today on the side of the road on I-195 East in Hamilton.
A manhunt near the vehicle by city police, Mercer County Sheriff’s officers and State Police helicopter and K-9 units did not locate anyone.
Police were eventually notified that Day had arrived at Lourdes Hospital in Willingboro, where he was being treated. Detectives went to the hospital and Day was placed under police guard before being taken to another medical facility.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said Day was shot once in the foot, and grazed by a bullet once in the head. He is expected to survive his injuries.
Investigators are in the process of filing unspecified criminal charges against Day.
City police did not immediately release the names of the officers who fired their weapons during the incident. As in all cases where officers discharge weapons, the case is being investigated by Internal Affairs detectives and the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office. Assistant Prosecutor Doris Galuchie said two officers fired their weapons.
