Danielle Schrenk died yesterday morning at a Trenton hospital, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed yesterday.

EWING — A 21-year-old Hamilton woman is dead following a shooting that happened early Sunday as she sat in her parked car on a Ewing street, officials said.

Danielle Schrenk died yesterday morning at a Trenton hospital, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed yesterday. Her killer remained at large last night, with little information released on a possible motive for the crime.

“At this point, all motives are being investigated,” said Casey DeBlasio, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.

Schrenk was sitting inside her Honda Accord with several other people on Rosedale Avenue between Morse Avenue and Parkside Avenue early Sunday, the prosecutor’s office said. Around 12:15 a.m. a gunman outside the vehicle opened fire, striking Schrenk but leaving the others in the car uninjured.

Schrenk was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment. She died there late yesterday morning.

James Harvin lives up the street from where the fatal shooting happened. Early Sunday, he heard two loud gunshots half a second apart at the time of the shooting, he said. He and his wife immediately turned off the lights in their home and hit the floor.

Other residents of the neighborhood said they knew nothing about what happened to Schrenk beyond gossip there had been a shooting on Rosedale. They did not know Schrenk and said they had not seen her or her car in the area before.

Schrenk’s car was secured by police, who yesterday were obtaining a search warrant to go through the vehicle for any evidence that could help solve her killing, DeBlasio said. Authorities had no description of the gunman.

The killing was Ewing’s first homicide of 2013, and the third in five months. Ewing experienced two homicides each year in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Township police were tight-lipped about the investigation into Sunday’s homicide, but said there is no indication it was connected to a possible shooting spurred by a domestic dispute Friday night, or another shooting from last month on nearby Dryden Avenue.

Ewing Detective Pat Holt and Mercer County Prosecutor’s Detective Tony Abarno are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call Holt at (609) 882-1313 ext. 5571, or the Ewing police confidential tip line at (609) 882-7530.

TRENTON — A Trenton man is being held in Camden County jail after he was arrested for his role in a “black money” scam, the attorney general's office said today.

Nyondah L. Blay, 38, was arrested with Carl Jenkins, 35, of Philadelphia, on Friday and charged with conspiracy, theft and forgery. He is being held on $150,000 bail.

The men allegedly asked victims to give them money with the promise that they would receive that amount and more in return.

Blay and Jenkins allegedly told the victims that they had hundreds of thousands of dollars that had been dyed black so that they could smuggle the cash out of Liberia.

The victims were asked to give the men money so that they could purchase expensive chemicals needed to extract the dye from the bills, officials said. The victims were allegedly told they would then be repayed several times the amount they fronted after the process was completed.

“These defendants allegedly preyed upon unsuspecting victims, portraying themselves as refugees who, because of their circumstances, were prepared to offer a deal too good to pass up,” Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said in a news release.

The attorney general's office and the FBI investigated, and Blay and Jenkins were arrested in Cherry Hill on Friday after they allegedly took several thousand dollars from a victim.

Judge Thomas A. Brown Jr. set bail for both at $150,000 at a hearing in Superior Court in Camden County yesterday.

Computers and printers along with "gambling receipts and records" were confiscated from the Caribbean Fried Chicken Convenience Deli in Hamilton and a home in Trenton, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said.

HAMILTON — County detectives on Monday busted a gambling ring that was operating out of a Caribbean deli run by a Trenton man, officials said today.

Detectives from the county’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) began the investigation about a month ago, but raided the Caribbean Fried Chicken Convenience Deli yesterday because they expected gambling activity to be heavier from Super Bowl Sunday, SIU commander Lt. Mike Novembre said.

Proprietor Miguel Azcona, 45, was arrested at the store on the 1700 block of East State Street Monday morning and charged with maintaining a gambling resort and possession of gambling records.

Detectives with search warrants found over $3,600 in cash along with a laptop computer attached to a receipt printer for issuing gambling slips, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said.

A fully loaded 9 mm handgun was found on Azcona’s person along with “numerous gambling slips and records,” the prosecutor’s office said. A loaded .38-caliber revolver was found at the store, along with a camera system and monitor, and thousands of bags used to package drugs, the prosecutor said.

The investigation began after township residents complained about alleged gambling activity at the store. They told township officials, who relayed the complaints to the prosecutor's office.

Authorities yesterday also raided Azcona’s home on Centre Street and found betting receipts and computers, more receipts and two receipt printers in the living room, along with $2,000 inside a jacket in the bedroom, the prosecutor said.

Detectives found identification for Yinett Dominguez, 28, who rents a room from Azcona, and she was detained on North Olden Avenue in Trenton. She too was charged with maintaining a gambling resort and possession of gambling records.

Azcona faces additional charges of possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute. He and Dominguez were released on summonses pending court dates.

A lawyer for Dorian Fleming said co-defendant Eric Hicks wrote a letter saying Fleming had nothing to do with the handgun or ammunition found in his home.

TRENTON — An attorney representing a Trenton man who was charged after a gun was found in his refrigerator said his client will be exonerated by his co-defendant.

At a bail hearing this morning in Superior Court, attorney Michael Amantia said Dorian Fleming, 26, has received a signed letter from his co-defendant Eric Hicks saying that Fleming had nothing to do with the handgun or high-capacity magazine that was found in his home.

“I can’t let Dorian sit in jail for something he did not do,” said Amantia, reading aloud from Hick’s statement

Hicks and Fleming were arrested last week after the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Special Investigations Unit raided the house. Fleming was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine.

Because Fleming was convicted of burglary in 2006 he is not allowed to have a gun.

Judge Thomas Sumners lowered Fleming’s bail from $150,000 to $100,000 and said the prosecutor’s office would have to examine the statement given by Hicks before dropping any charges.

In addition to the weapon, the search of the home on the 500 block of Genesee Street also yielded 20 bags of marijuana that were found in the basement.

Hicks, 29, of Philadelphia, is charged with drug offenses and possession of a firearm while committing a narcotics offense. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

A bail hearing for Hicks had been scheduled for today but was rescheduled for a later date.

There was no immediate word whether the gun thrown was believed to be the missing service weapon lost by Officer Richard Takach last month.

TRENTON — Police and firefighters combed the Delaware & Raritan Canal this afternoon, searching for a handgun that may have been thrown into the waterway during a foot chase, fire officials said.

No weapon was found, despite a half-hour search by firefighters who used a metal detector along several hundred yards of canal bed, churning up leaves and muck from the bottom and going through the material to see if the gun was being held underneath.

Firefighters, including the marine unit, were called out to assist the police after a foot chase near the spot where the canal goes under Prospect Street, Battalion Chief Frank Fanning said.

Two officers had been chasing a man, who ran next to the canal at around 12:30 p.m. and made a throwing motion with his hand, Fanning said. No arrests were reported.

The canal runs next to the west district police precinct, where a service weapon lost last month by Officer Richard Takach was last seen. There was no immediate word on whether police believed the gun thought to be in the canal was Takach's.

Trenton Policemen’s Benevolent Association local has offered a $1,000 reward for the gun’s safe return.

TRENTON — A city man who was arrested after allegedly threatening a police officer the night a Mercer County Corrections officer was killed at a Chambersburg nightclub led officers on a foot chase along the Delaware & Raritan Canal Thursday, dropping three bricks of heroin, police said.

Shaquel Rock, 19, was arrested following the pursuit, which began when Officers Travis Maxwell and John Sangillo noticed a car with tinted windows driving on Bellevue Avenue around noon, Lt. Tom Murphy said.

As the officers turned their vehicle around to pull the car over, its driver allegedly took off onto Calhoun Street and pulled over. There, Rock got out of the car and walked toward the canal path as the car sped away, Murphy said.

When the officers began to follow, Rock fled down the canal path, tossing out several objects as he ran. Officers eventually arrested him on Bellevue Avenue after Rock hopped a fence, police said.

Sangillo went back to the spot where Rock had tossed the objects and picked up three packages. Inside were 50 packets apiece of heroin, Murphy said.

The car with tinted windows was not tracked down.

Rock was charged with drug possession, eluding, obstructing the administration of law, and one outstanding warrant. In November, Rock allegedly threatened an off-duty police officer providing security at the Baldassari Regency in Trenton on the same night Mercer County Corrections Officer Carl Batie was shot dead there. Rock was arrested on terroristic threats charges within a day.

Despite recovering the drugs, police and firefighters combed the canal in the early afternoon Thursday searching for a handgun that might have been thrown following the foot chase, Battalion Chief Frank Fanning said at the scene.

No weapon was found, despite close to half an hour of firefighters using a metal detector along several hundred yards of canal bed, churning up leaves and muck from the bottom and going through them by hand to see if the gun was underneath.

TRENTON — Jury selection will resume tomorrow in the murder trial of Ivelis Turell, who claims that she shot and killed her live-in boyfriend, Michael Whitaker, 35, in self defense in 2007.

Attorneys were in the midst of jury selection on Tuesday when the proceedings were halted so that an appellate court judge could decide whether to postpone the trial so Turrell, 34, could get a different attorney.

However, the appellate judge ruled that Superior Court Judge Pedro Jiminez had been “more than indulgent” in granting numerous adjournments in the past, and Turrell’s latest application for a postponement was denied.

Turell, the mother of two young children, is facing between 30 years and life in prison if convicted. She will be represented by Steven Slavin in the trial. Turell remains free on $250,000 pending the conclusion of the trial.

Whitaker was shot on April 30, 2007 in the Ferry Street home where he lived with Turell. He suffered a chest wound and died in a hospital several hours later.

An attorney who represented Turell previously said she was a battered and abused woman who was acting in self defense when she killed Whitaker.

On the night of the shooting, Whitaker and Turell got into an fight just before 11 p.m.

Although she shot Whitaker, Turell received a bullet wound in the left shoulder, for which she underwent surgery.
