TRENTON — A detective who was involved in a fatal shootout yesterday morning remains hospitalized and in critical condition, a police spokesman said today.
Detective Edgar Rios, a 30-year veteran of the force, is recovering from surgery this morning, officials said. Rios was shot in the abdomen, causing internal bleeding, during a gunfight that left another officer wounded and a suspect dead.
Rios, 53, remains hospitalized at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton in "critical but stable condition," police spokesman Lt. Mark Keiffer said.
Detective James Letts, who was shot in the right shoulder, was released from the hospital and is recuperating at home, officials said.
The two officers were shot at while investigating a domestic violence incident on the first block Hobart Avenue.
The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Eric McNeil, was shot dead when the officers returned fire, police said.
Early that day McNeil had allegedly beaten up his girlfriend and stabbed her three-week-old pit bull puppy to death in her home. Police officers went to the house at 2:30 a.m., taking the woman to the hospital for evaluation and then to police headquarters.
When Rios and Letts returned to the Hobart Avenue home with a crime scene photographer and the victim at around 8:43 a.m., McNeil shot at them, officials said. He fired at least three times and the police officers returned fire.
The victim was back at her home this morning, friends and family gathered outside the house said she was still shaken up but trying to move on from the incident.
