Troopers and township police pulled the taxi over on the 1400 block of East State around 5:30 p.m. and detained the driver.
HAMILTON — The New Jersey State Police said today the bomb scare they were investigating Tuesday night related to non-specific threats made against the State Police and possibly their local headquarters adjacent to the Hamilton Marketplace shopping mall. The motorist they detained on East State Street Tuesday evening in connection with the scare was a taxi driver and was released shortly afterward with no charges filed, State Police said. They said their investigation had shown no evidence of an explosive or any ongoing danger.
Despite a large-scale law enforcement response Tuesday that included shutting down a section of East State Street in the township and bringing out the State Police’s bomb squad, K-9s, and a helicopter, no explosive device was found in the cab.
Troopers and township police pulled the taxi over on the 1400 block of East State around 5:30 p.m. and detained the driver.
“That person who was driving that taxi was interviewed and released,” said Sgt. Adam Grossman, a State Police spokesman.
The bomb scare began at 4:20 p.m. with a threatening phone call. Grossman said the caller made unspecified threats against the State Police, which potentially included Troop C headquarters in Hamilton. Troopers there searched the area of the station, which is adjacent to the Hamilton Marketplace shopping center.
When the taxi was stopped, the driver was the only person in the vehicle. Grossman did not specify why authorities pulled the vehicle over, but said the driver will not face charges.
“It’s an ongoing investigation in regards to the phone calls,” Grossman said.
