EAST WINDSOR — A township man was arrested early Friday morning after attempting to kidnap his ex-girlfriend with a toy gun in Freehold and then leading police on a low-speed chase that ended in East Windsor, police said.
Michael Scholander, 42, waited outside of the Sears at the Freehold Raceway Mall for his ex-girlfriend to get out of work around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night, police said.
Police said Scholander confronted his ex-girlfriend, brandishing a gun, and ordered her to get into the car with him. At some point, a co-worker of the victim came to her defense and Scholander dropped the gun, which police said was an airsoft pistol used to shoot plastic pellets, police said.
Police said Scholander picked up the gun, got into the car and fled the scene.
Since the victim knew it was Scholander, she notified police. No one was injured and at no point did the victim get into Scholander’s car, police said.
East Windsor police entered the chase at around 1:35 a.m. on Friday, when they were notified that there was a motor vehicle heading into their township along Route 130 north.
Police said Scholander continued north on Route 130 at about 40 mph until he eventually stopped near Town Center Road.
During the stop, police found the airsoft handgun and charged Scholander with eluding, careless driving and failure to stop for an emergency vehicle, among other charges.
Scholander was then turned over to the Freehold Township Police Department where he was charged with attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon among others, police said.
Scholander is currently being held in Monmouth County jail on $170,000 bail, police said.
