TRENTON
— A city man who was shot once after being ambushed in an alleyway then again while running away from the gunfire Wednesday night may have been targeted by his attacker, police said today.

The 21-year-old victim was walking in an alleyway between East Paul Avenue and Chase Street around 7:30 p.m. when a man dressed all in black and carrying a handgun approached.

“The suspect didn’t say anything, and shot in the victim’s direction,” Lt. Steve Varn said.

One of the rounds hit the victim in the knee, and he tried to run away, police said. The gunman continued firing as the victim fled, with another bullet striking the victim in his thumb.

A vehicle parked nearby also was hit.

Officers sent out on a shooting report found the victim down on the first block of Chase Street. He was taken by ambulance to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Varn said.

Detective Wilfredo Rodriguez is investigating. Anyone with information on the case should call police at (609) 989-4170, or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
