TRENTON — Police are trying to solve a Halloween mystery of an empty SUV found with its engine running and a number of bullet holes in a West Ward back lot.
Around 10:15 p.m. on Oct. 31, officers Stewart Owens and Joe D’Ambrosio were patrolling on Bellevue Avenue near Hermitage Avenue when they heard numerous gunshots. At the same time, a 911 call came in for shots fired at Edgewood and Hermitage avenues.
The officers drove toward the sound of the gunfire and searched the area, eventually finding an unoccupied red Ford Escape behind an abandoned former supermarket on the 200 block of North Hermitage Avenue.
“The vehicle was running and the door was open,” Lt. Steve Varn said.
Several bullets had struck the SUV but there was no sign of victims. Police called local hospitals to check whether any gunshot victims had walked in, but no victims or witnesses were found, Varn said.
The SUV was towed back to police headquarters and detectives contacted the owner, a Hamilton man. Police would not say if they believe the owner was in the SUV at the time of the shooting. The case remains under investigation.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call police at (609) 989-4170, or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
