Gary Boyd Sr., 42, was shot by officers three times, once in each arm and once in the right thigh, but an autopsy determined his death was caused by the stab wound to the heart
HAMILTON — A Hamilton man who was shot during a confrontation with police Friday died from a self-inflicted stab wound to the heart, the prosecutor’s office said today.
Gary Boyd Sr., 42, was shot by officers three times, once in each arm and once in the right thigh, but an autopsy determined his death was caused by the stab wound to the heart, said Casey DeBlasio, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.
The county medical examiner ruled his death a suicide, DeBlasio said.
The confrontation outside a Cedar Lane house that led officers to shoot Boyd started with a domestic violence call by his estranged wife at 10 p.m. on Friday.
The woman told police Boyd had sent her text messages in violation of a restraining order, authorities said. While she was on the phone with police, Boyd emerged through a basement door with a knife, police said.
Boyd began to stab himself with the knife and the woman ran from the house, authorities said. Boyd, who followed her outside, had already stabbed himself several times before police officers arrived at the house, police said.
Boyd was brandishing the 5-inch blade in a threatening manner and he ignored repeated orders from the officers to drop the knife before police opened fire, authorities said.
Boyd was pronounced dead at 4:49 a.m. Saturday after emergency surgery at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, the prosecutor’s office said.
