Gairy Robinson had been placed back in patrol last week following Mack's Feb. 7 conviction on all six federal charges against him.
TRENTON — The police department yesterday backtracked and reassigned Detective Gairy Robinson to Mayor Tony Mack’s security detail, according to a copy of the personnel order obtained by The Times.
Robinson had been placed back in patrol last week following Mack’s Feb. 7 conviction on all six federal charges against him. But Mack called over the weekend to ask for his driver back, police said.
The most recent order reassigning Robinson carries Tuesday’s date but was effective Monday. Yet at Tuesday’s council meeting, Business Administrator Sam Hutchinson said the matter was “under review.” Sgt. Adrian Mendez, who is Police Director Ralph Rivera’s chief of staff, said Robinson was told that he was going back to patrol by this morning.
Robinson was seen driving the mayor away from last night’s council meeting and was behind the wheel of the mayor’s SUV again this afternoon.
Rivera was out sick and not available for comment today, while Mendez did not return a request for comment.
Following Tuesday’s city council meeting, Hutchinson said that Mack’s police driver had been a topic of discussion between Rivera, Hutchinson and the state Department of Community Affairs.
