TRENTON — A pair of Ewing men suspected for their involvement in a string of Mercer and Somerset County burglaries will be held in lieu of $50,000 bail each after getting arrested last month for leading police on a car- and foot-chase after fleeing from the scene of another suspected break-in.
Colin McHugh, 28, and Michael Kopyscianski, 29, were spotted running away from a West Windsor home on March 25, when they got into their red Honda to flee the area, Mercer County Prosecutor Tom Meidt said this morning. Police allege McHugh, who was driving, made eye contact with officers who were attempting to stop the car, and knowingly tried to evade them, driving through a stop sign and cutting off a police cruiser to do so, Meidt said.
After a brief car chase, McHugh pulled over, and the duo ran in separate directions. Both were tracked down by police on foot later that day.
Public defender Kathleen Redpath-Perez said that Kopyscianski has previously suffered from heroin addiction, and, after being clean for three years, recently relapsed. He hopes to “turn his life around and get clean,” she said.
The pair are charged with burglary, criminal mischief, theft by unlawful taking and resisting arrest. A search of their homes and cars after the arrest turned up property that had been reported stolen in West Windsor and Somerset counties, including property that was taken from West Windsor earlier on the day of their arrest, police have said.
