A 19-year-old Hamilton resident accused of shooting a woman in the chest was offered a plea deal from the state that would land him behind bars for 15 years.

TRENTON — A 19-year-old Hamilton resident accused of shooting a woman in the chest was offered a plea deal from the state that would land him behind bars for 15 years.

Aleem Harris was given the opportunity today to plead guilty to one count of attempted murder in the Oct. 2, 2013 incident in which he is accused of shooting a 41-year-old woman while struggling to enter her Michael Drive apartment.

Though an official plea of not guilty was entered by Harris’ lawyer, Caroline Turner, today, Harris will have until May 19 to consider the state’s plea offer. At the time of the incident, Harris was allegedly engaged in an ongoing dispute with the woman’s teenage son, whom police believe was the intended target of the shooting.

The woman was the only person injured in the incident.

The following day, Harris turned himself in at St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton.
He was charged with aggravated assault and multiple weapons offenses and has been held in lieu of $500,000 full cash bail.
