Hamilton — A Hamilton man arrested on charges he assaulted a police officer has a history of attempting to harm members of the force.
Jerome Friedman, 25, was arrested in Florida last year for “attempting to injure a police dog or horse,” according to Mercer County Superior Court Judge Thomas Brown.
Friedman was before Brown this morning for a bail hearing on the newest assault charge, which stemmed from a Feb. 18 incident where he attempted to punch a sheriff’s officer who had come to his Estates Boulevard home to arrest Friedman on an outstanding warrant.
The warrant was related to another February case where Friedman is accused of stealing a car from outside the bar Pete’s Place on South Broad Street in Trenton, according to Mercer County Assistant Prosecutor John Boyle. Boyle said Friedman, of Hamilton, was seen on security footage as well as identified by a bartender as the person who took a pair of keys off the bar, then got into a 2011 Toyota Camry and drove away with no headlights on.
The car was recovered in Philadelphia after it had been crashed at an intersection, with Friedman fleeing the scene on foot, Boyle said.
After failing to appear in court on the theft charge, a bench warrant was issued, at which point the sheriff’s officers and U.S. Marshals sought Friedman out at his home. Friedman barricaded himself in a second-floor bedroom, then assaulted the officer, then leaped from a 17-foot-high window in an attempt to flee, sustaining injuries from the fall.
Brown issued a bail of $15,000 with a 10 percent option on the car theft charges and $20,000 with a 10 percent option in the assault case.
