HAMILTON — A township man who allegedly stabbed his friend then went to see him in the hospital Thursday night was arrested after a fierce fight inside Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, police said.

One officer was injured subduing 27-year-old Eric Heisler, who allegedly locked his hands behind his back and refused to be taken into custody. Police did not know if Heisler was reaching for a weapon but grabbed him and tried to keep him from moving rather than draw their guns inside the hospital, Capt. Remo DiPaolo said.

“They just stopped him from being able to pull anything,” DiPaolo said.

The 27-year-old victim, also a township resident, was stabbed twice in the abdomen and needed surgery, but was expected to survive. Police do not know the motive in the case, which remains under investigation.

Officers were called to the 300 block of McAdoo Avenue at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, where they found the victim lying stabbed on the sidewalk. The victim was uncooperative at first, police said.

Heisler and another man were standing next to the victim and at first claimed that two other men had stabbed the victim, then got into a car and driven away.

Both Heisler and the other man, who was not charged with a crime, are “familiar” with the victim, DiPaolo said.

The victim was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment as police began their investigation. By the time they identified Heisler as their suspect, he and the witness had gone to the hospital to check on the victim’s condition. Police confronted Heisler and said they were arresting him.

“When they went to place him under arrest, he resisted,” DiPaolo said.

Heisler was finally taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. The investigation is ongoing and more charges could be filed. Heisler was being held on $122,500 bail yesterday.
