TRENTON — A Trenton Police officer shot and wounded a suspect during a foot pursuit in the North Ward tonight, police confirmed.

The foot pursuit came after officers chased a carload of suspects in an earlier shooting on Perry Street, where two men were wounded, Lt. Steve Varn said.

The pursuit went several blocks from the first crime scene on Perry Street near Montgomery Street, continuing to side streets off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The car stopped, and two suspects fled on foot, Varn said. One other suspect was arrested by police at the vehicle.

An officer ran after the two fleeing suspects, catching up to one on Skillman Alley, between Bond Street and East Ingham Avenue, Varn said. There the officer engaged the suspect and one shot was fired, striking the suspect in the foot. The officer could see that the suspect was carrying a handgun, police said.

The names of suspects, charges against them and the name of the officer involved were not immediately released by police

The two men, wounded during the initial shooting on Perry Street, went to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment and are expected to survive their injuries.

The gunshot wound to the suspect shot by police is not believed to be life-threatening, Varn said.
