TRENTON – A Mercer County Sheriff’s detective sustained cuts and bruises during a foot pursuit today when he was struck by a car driven by a fellow officer heading to the scene to assist him, officials said.
Detective James Udijohn was on the 200 block of West State Street around 5:15 p.m. when he attempted to arrest 20-year-old Mason Smith, a suspect in a Hamilton robbery who was the subject of an arrest warrant, Undersheriff Pedro Medina said tonight.
Udijohn was chasing after Smith when he ran across the street and into the path of a car driven by Detective Jeremy Stewart. The vehicle struck Udijohn and injured him, Medina said.
Other law enforcement officers including Detective Bill Perez and state troopers arrived and arrested Smith. Udijohn was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he received stitches to his head and was treated for other injuries, Medina said. They were not serious wounds, and Udijohn was going to stay overnight at the hospital but expected to be fine.
While sheriff’s officers were at the hospital, a car drove up to the emergency room door carrying a man who had been shot three times in an unrelated incident, Medina said.
The sheriff’s Internal Affairs unit would be investigating the car crash and Udijohn’s injury.
