Also late Saturday, a man was seriously injured during a stabbing elsewhere in South Trenton that apparently occurred outside a deli.
TRENTON – Police yesterday identified a 53-year-old man who was fatally shot in South Trenton Saturday night.
Adelso Buendia was shot once during a confrontation with a suspect near the intersection of Grand Street and Elm Street, Lt. Steve Varn said. Buendia was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after police were called out on a report of a man shot around 9 p.m.
“Motive is still under investigation,” Varn said yesterday.
Police said Buendia was killed near the intersection of Grand Street and Elm Street. Officers called out to the scene could see there was little hope for him due to his injuries, but an ambulance was called and medical personnel arrived to pronounce him dead.
No arrests have been made, and a full description of the lone suspect police believe was responsible for the killing was not immediately available.
Though police were able to make contact with Buendia’s family to notify them of his death, they were still searching for a permanent address for the deceased.
George Muschal, the city council president who represents the South Ward, said violence in the city has continued to worsen after last weekend’s spate of homicides that left four dead, including a man shot during a robbery gone bloody on East State Street.
“It’s more like escalation from the gang members shooting each other - you had the innocent bystander on State Street,” Muschal said.
Saturday’s homicide brings the year’s killing total in the city to 29. The 28th homicide - the beating death of 47-year-old Herbert Cummings - was reported early Friday morning.
Violence continues in the capital city despite a contingent of New Jersey State Police who were brought in last month to aid Trenton’s layoff-depleted police force. Troopers responded to Saturday night’s killing and were guarding the crime scene as city police and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office began their investigation.
Also late Saturday, a man was seriously injured during a stabbing elsewhere in South Trenton that apparently occurred outside a deli. The stabbing happened on the 1300 block of South Clinton Avenue, and police at first thought they could be dealing with another homicide.
The victim in that case was rushed to the hospital, where his injuries were at first believed to be life-threatening. However, surgery at Capital Health Regional Medical Center was successful, and police now believe the victim will survive his injuries, Varn said.
Anyone with information on these crimes should call police at (609) 989-4170, or the Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
